Keweenaw Cyclists Represent at Superior Bike Fest
July 9, 2009
The Keweenaw's Red Jacket - BlueSky Health and Dorfblick Training Center - Flyer Cycles cycling teams racked up several wins, made several trips to the podium and gained valuable road racing experience at this year's Superior Bike Fest. The annual event features three days of racing: a Friday-night criterium in downtown Marquette, road races of various lengths on Saturday and both a circuit and a mountain bike race on Sunday.

The Cat IV race in Friday night's crit saw the largest contingent of racers from the Keweenaw: Red Jackets John Gershenson, Brett Hamlin, James Bialas and Dorfblick Training Center Riders Ryan Tervo, Andrew Joda and Jessie Smith. Led by Gershenson, the three Red Jackets finished within the field. Two of the three Dorfblick riders made the initial selection and were able to contest the final sprint. Leadingthe way and capturing the win was Ryan Tervo. Teammate Andrew Joda finished fourth. Jessie Smith bowed out early on after crashing and subsequently flatting. Diane Ursu also proudly represented the Red Jackets in the criterium with a solid finish.

Saturday saw riders head off on their respective races under threatening skies. The majority of Red Jacket - BlueSky Health riders opted for the 35 mile citizen race. Seven Red Jackets worked together in the men's race, and were a force to be reckoned with: Hamlin, Szubielak, Carpenter, Hackney, Lehto, Bialas and Pletka worked together throughout the race. In the end, it was James Bialas who led the team with a 6th place finish, edging teammates Pat Subielak (7th) and Brett Hamlin (10th). Lehto (14), Pletka (16), Hackney (17) and Carpenter (18) can all be pleased with their performance.

Tammi Lehto, racing in the women's 35 mile race escaped in a quartet early on in the race. Though one of the strongest in her group, her prospects for a victory were dashed when heavy rain began to fall and the Red Jacket rider opted for safety as the breakaway descended down Marquette Mountain and she let the riders in the break roll away. Nevertheless, Lehto held off the field on her own and finished fourth.

Racing in the 55 mile Cat V race were Red Jacket John Gershenson and two Dorfblick riders, Joda and Smith. Succumbing to knee pains midway through the contest, Gershenson became separated from the main field and comleted the race on his own. Taking the 15-man field sprint in the end was Dorfblick rider Andrew Joda. A few places behind him in 8th was teammate Jessie Smith.

Up at the crack of dawn for the Category 5 / citizen circuit race were Red Jacket Bruce Pletka and the boys from the Dorfblick Training Center. The three-lap race, contested on Marquette's scenic Presque Isle was a fast and furious affair. It was gruppo compato for the two and a half laps. On the final climb, Dorfblick rider Ryan Tervo made the winning move. Teammates Smith and Joda held on for second and third, respectively. Bruce Pletka crossed the line in 15th position.

Following the circuit race, race action moved over to Marquette Mountain for the Mountain Chase mountain bike race. With most of the Red Jackets opting for dirt over pavement, the team was well represented on the trails. Leading the way for the Red Jackets in the 24 mile xc race was Mark Klein, who finished in 8th. Joh Klimowicz and Pat Szubielak also rode the 3-lap race. Opting instead for 16 miles were Brett Hamlin (3rd overall, 2nd in age group), James Bialas (4th/3rd), Chris Lehto (8th/1st) and, in the women's race, Tammi Lehto (4th/1st in age group).
