Red Jackets Rack Up the Miles at 12 Hours of Potluck
Brett Hamlin, July 24, 2009
Let the BlueSkies shine through – this is exactly what the Red Jacket - BlueSky Health team did at the 12 Hours of Potluck Mountain bike race this past weekend.

The day looked cold and grim before the start, a day that would do the month of October proud, but the team wasn’t going to let the cold temperatures get them down. Three Red Jacket - BlueSky Health team members raced the six hour solo, while three others raced the full 12 hours.

In the 6 hour category, Chris Lehto and new ‘jacket Steve Hackney did well, finishing 53.1 and 47.2 miles respectively in six hours of racing. Placing second overall, and just minutes behind first place, was Mark Klein with 70.8 mile completed. Tammy Lehto was one of the few brave females who participated in the full twelve hours, but a close call with a bear stopped her progress one lap early. She finished 76.7 miles and finished third.

In the men's 12 hour category, Brett Hamlin set an initial goal of reaching 75 miles but officially recorded 100.3 miles. He finished 7th, both behind and in front of some big local cycling names.

The most impressive rider of the day was James Bialas, who had the foresight to bring an extra bike. Little did James know, that he (and a tree) would participate in high-speed material property impact test. As a result of this test, James’ single speed 29 now has a ten inch shorter wheel base. After a self diagnose of nothing more than “Y” chromosome disease, James was back on a bike and tallied up a total of 94.4 miles and one heck of a good “shiner.”

The Keweenaw was also well represented in the team and solo categories with names that include: Hauswirth, Young, Ignasiak, Karinen (First Coed 12); Sharp, Todzlowski, Woodbeck Featherly (First Mens 12); Karinen, Hattaja, Tervo (Third Mens 12); Karinen, Bourgo, Young, Oppliger (First Womens 12); Karinen, Sharp, Chard (Second Mens 6); Meese, Sharp, Wheeler, Chard (First Womens 6); Sommerfeld (Eighth Mens 6 solo); Meese (Fifth Mens 6 solo).

Next year look for a new team category. A four person team which must ride every lap of the event together for the entire 12 hours – anyone interested?
